Role of Diet in Managing Chronic Kidney Disease

Diet is essential in managing chronic kidney disease. In this post we will analyse what type of foods affect kidney disease.

Oligo antigenic diet is used to prevent inflammation in body. It is prescribed to treat leaky gut. If there is proteinuria present, that means kidney is getting damaged. So we have to control that.

Plant based diets are shown effective in manging various disease. Here is a case report on Crohn’s Disease Remission with a Plant-Based Diet consisting of whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables.

Dont's of Diet in Managing Chronic Kidney Disease

1. Raw Onions is a source of gas reflex- New study titled "The Effect of Raw Onions on Acid Reflux and Reflux Symptoms" reveals that raw onions create gas reflex and should be avoided.

2. Sugar -  High blood sugar will force the kidney to filter the blood vessels multiple times. This heavy work will damage kidney filter. It is wise to avoid direct sugar intake and eat fruits. The study indicates that CKD patients must be prescribed to avoid the consumption of added sugars.

3. Salt - Since the kidney is damaged already, sodium will accumulate in the blood. Salt induces high blood pressure in body, damaging blood vessels in the kidney. High salt intake in CKD patients can be compared to sugar intake in diabetic patients. Study reveals that a low sodium intake would decrease 24-hour BP, fluid volume, and 24-hour urinary protein and albumin. Another study confirms that low slat intake reduced blood pressure considerably and consistently reduced proteinuria.

Do's of Diet in Managing Chronic Kidney Disease

Types of Spices

1. Turmeric- Turmeric is found to be useful in reducing inflammation in the body. Curcumin in turmeric has been giving promising result in managing gut health.

Types of Vegetables

1. Spinach - A high calcium diet in rats resulted in regulated kidney ACE, reduced albuminuria and blood pressure. However other research shows that high level of calcium in blood can cause calcification and development of stones in kidney. Hence a balanced intake of calcium is suggested.

Types of Fruits

2. Red Grape - Red grape also associated with lowering blood pressure and helping to lower the risk to ESRD.

3. Pomegranate - Pomegranate is considered to lower blood pressure and help in preserving renal function.

4. Flax Seeds - Study mention that the n-3 PUFA, alpha-linolenic acid provided as flax seed was renal protective. Flax seeds also noted for reduced glomerular injury. In a study conducted in animals, flax seeds was found to reduce proteinuria and glomerular and tubulointerstitial lesions. Another study in mice proves that flax seeds are shown to inhibit the renin mRNA levels in SHR 37 by regulating blood pressure.

5. Fish oil  - Fish oil is used in many studies to evaluate management of inflammation in the body. Many studies has found that fish oil reduced blood pressure and thereby reducing proteinuria. Another study states that 2 grams flaxseed oil had 36% greater decrease in a marker of inflammation.

6. Probiotics - Probiotics are found to reduce serum c reactive protein and restore the gut balance.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar - A study took 110  type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and experimental group were given 15 ml apple cider vinegar in 200 ml water during dinner for 3 months mention that ACV  is effective in controlling diabetes, lowering hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. In another study, 10 subjects were given 20 g apple cider vinegar after a 2-min of taking food. They found that ACV significantly lowered post-meal blood glucose levels.  Dietary vinegar prevents kidney stone recurrence via epigenetic regulations is a good research which shows vinegar prevents renal CaOx crystal formation through influencing urinary citrate and calcium excretion via epigenetic regulations.Vinegar has reduced postprandial responses of blood glucose and insulin, and increased the subjective rating of satiety in another study.

A paper mention that the fresh lemon juice and vinegar mixture caused a significant reduction Salmonella typhimurium to an undetectable level. Another research took 39 participants and were given 30 mL/d of ACV for 12 weeks. It shows that ACV significantly reduced Plasma triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC), body weight, BMI, Hip circumference, visceral adiposity index (VAI) and appetite score.

High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration significantly increased. Study on rats shows that ACV has a  a satiating effect, antihyperlipidemic and hypoglycemic effects. However erosive tooth wear was diagnosed in people consuming more acv. It is wise to clean mouth with water after consumption of ACV.
