Role of Fish Oil in Managing Chronic Kidney Disease

This post is trying to analyse the use of fish oil in managing chronic kidney disease. Basically there is much information out there that sometimes contradict each other. So it would be wise to compile information out there on fish oil and how CKD is affected by the sue of it. One has to test each food and then use it. Many are running out of foods and methods to fight to CKD and IBS.

1. Fish oil and Proteinuria - Article published on 2012 in Nephron Clinical Practice titled as Omega–3 Fatty Acids Ameliorate Proteinuria but Not Renal Function in IgA Nephropathy: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials authored by Chou H.-H. · Chou H.-H.a · Chiou Y.-Y.d, e · Hung P.-H.b · Chiang P.-C.b · Wang S.-T.c mention that Fish oil or ω–3 fatty acids (O3FAs) can ameliorate proteinuria in IgAN but they are not dose dependent.

2. Fish Oil treats IgA Vasulitis - A 2016 new study titled Refractory Cutaneous IgA Vasculitis Treated with Omega-3 Fatty Acids states that Omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) capsules containing 460 mg eicosapentaenoic acid and 380 mg of docosahexaenoic acid have been used to treat IgA nephropathy (IgAN) but not cutaneous IgA vasculitis (IgAV)..

3. Fish Oil supplementation reduced risk to ESRD -  In a new 2017 study nine randomized controlled trials evaluating 444 patients with chronic kidney disease were included in the study Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation is associated with a significantly reduced risk of end-stage renal disease and delays the progression of this disease.

4. Fish oil reduced the progression in IGI nephropathy - A 1999 study titled "The Long-Term Outcome of Patients with IgA Nephropathy Treated with Fish Oil in a Controlled Trial" reveals that fish oil supplementation reduced the progression of IGA patients in a 6 year follow up. Same authors had conducted another study in 1994 where they used fish oil to reduce the risk of ESRD in CKD patients.

5. Fish oil attenuated PKD progression and improved dyslipidemia - new study in 2015 titled Evaluating the therapeutic value of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation on polycystic kidney disease and co-morbidities mention that fish oil reduced the risk to ESRD.

6. Fish oil reduced proteinuria and reduce nephropathy - Study titled Chapter 11 published on 2018 Soybeans, Flaxseeds, and Fish Oil in the Treatment of Renal Disease mention that supplementation of fish oil reduced proteinuria.

7. Fish oil combined with Enalapril - In a study conducted in 1993 on rats titled "Combined Effects of Dietary Fish Oil and Sodium Restriction on Blood Pressure in Enalapril-Treated Hypertensive Rats" three of this combined showed better prognosis.

8. Fish Oil retards the progression in IGA nephropathy - A study in 1994 was conducted 55 patients. They were given 12g of fish oil and 21 to receive placebo. The study concluded that In patients with IgA nephropathy, treatment with fish oil for two years retards the rate at which renal function is lost.

9. Fish oil might not treat IgA Nephropathy - A 1994, 6 month study were conducted in 32 patients with IgA nephropathy. In that  15 were given fish oil. After 6 months they concluded that fish oil is not effective in treatment of igi nephropathy  in patients with proteinuria and moderately reduced gfr.

Many other countries have done studies and the gram amount matters less and it’s all about DHA and EPA.. We have conducted a survey among 30 patients with IgA nephropathy. Many of them are taking the doses of 1000mg to 12000mg. Many of them were having fish burps and chose to have odour less, metal free, vegetarian capsules.

A Good way to avoid fish burps while taking fish oil tablet is to take with food and NOT with hot coffee. Nordic naturals lemon flavored super omega is said not to give aftertaste or burps but is expensive. Many also take plant based omega like flax seeds to go complete vegetarian.
